for everyone

by Pablo Neruda

He who becomes the slave of habit,
who follows the same routes every day,
who never changes pace,
who does not risk and change the color of his clothes,
who does not speak and does not experience, dies slowly.

He or she who shuns passion,
who prefers black on white,
dotting ones “is” rather than a bundle of emotions,
the kind that make your eyes glimmer,
that turn a yawn into a smile,
that make the heart pound in the face of mistakes and feelings, dies slowly.

He or she who does not turn things topsy-turvy,
who is unhappy at work,
who does not risk certainty for uncertainty,
to thus follow a dream,
those who do not forego sound advice at least once in their lives, die slowly.

He who does not travel,
who does not read,
who does not listen to music,
who does not find grace in himself, dies slowly.

He who slowly destroys his own self-esteem,
who does not allow himself to be helped,
who spends days on end complaining about his own bad luck,
about the rain that never stops, dies slowly.

He or she who abandon a project before starting it,
who fail to ask questions on subjects he doesn’t know,
he or she who don’t reply when they are asked something they do know, die slowly.

Let’s try and avoid death in small doses,
always reminding oneself that being alive requires an effort by far
greater than the simple fact of breathing.
Only a burning patience will lead to the attainment of a splendid happiness.

This is such beautiful advice. It should penetrate the heart and get inside of it. It should live within our eyes as we look both outwards and inwards to our souls and those of others.

This is excellent truth...Thank you for sharing this wisdom of honest surviving. Our entire body requires stimulation. We are going to die someday for it is part of life, knowing patience and to question impatience, is leaning towards completing our inner prize...Have a great afternoon!

Yes, Rose, we are. Everyone of us is an Universe; everyone is unique. Everyone has so much to share. This is our riches. It is so wonderful that we could share! Thank you, my sweet one!

Sharon, thank you so much for the comment! Sometimes, when I am tired I need to read and re-read something like this. I imagine the life as a distance where the start and the end points are pre-determinate (we can’t change it). But it is up to us how we will go through this distance. Thank you, my sweet friend! Have a wonderful day!

Moving through life with no change in what we do or how we perceive our own life or the world, we become stale and that is when we actually stop moving... which is the very moment we start to die slowly. Avoiding things in fear, clinging on to old beliefs for fear of what might happen, the fear of what might happen holding us back, that fear kills us slowly. A very great bit of writing. :)

Thank you for your comment, my dear friends!

"Fear of the unknown shatters the vibration in our brain"… You are so much right, Ben! I think that everyone of us has this fear… To overcome it is the challenge. The changes provide us with the best opportunity to unfold our capacity, to develop our potential, to discover our real nature… But it is not easy, I know….

Open our hearts and brains, is the best way to keep from the real death – the death of our soul. Not physically, of course - the matter don’t disappear; just change the form… Thank you for the comment Attena!
