for everyone
Ice Hotel Québec – Canada is one of the two ice hotels in the world. The other one, being in Sweden.

The Ice Hotel opened its curtains (for doors) during the winter in 2001, but as happens every year, the ice hotel is fated for an annual rebirth. Under the warming sun of early April, it slowly melts away like Dorothy's witch, only to come to life again the next winter.

The construction of the Ice Hotel, one of the most uncommon and complicated construction projects, takes approximately five weeks. At least 12,000 tons of snow and 400 tons of ice are used in the creation of this amazing ice and snow crystal cathedral. It's total surface of 3,000 sq m (30,000 sq ft), is more than enough space to accommodate, besides the guests, a large number of visitors.

The Ice Hotel officials claim that the hotel is almost always fully booked. Guests spend the night in one of the 32-cosy rooms and theme suites, which can accommodate some 80 persons. Rooms are furnished with an ice slab for a bed and a bedside table sculptured from ice. The guests sleep, tucked in warm sleeping bags on the ice slabs, which are covered with deer pelts over which are placed thick foam-rubber slabs.

Besides the rooms and theme suites, Ice Bar and hot tubs, the hotel incorporates two exhibition rooms, a movie theatre, a magnificent chapel, a large ballroom, and functional fireplaces. As for the chapel, worshippers listen to sermons sitting on stools of ice. However, this icy house of worship is, in the main, used for marriage purposes. On the agenda, one of the first stops for the visitors is at the Absolut ice bar. Drinks are served in ice utensils and appetizers on ice plates. Warm mittens are a must as visitors walk along siping their drinks.

The interior temperature is 4 degrees below freezing, somewhat warmer than the outside air. To warm up further, the hotel even has a fireplace made from ice. Only the toilets are heated to room temperatures, the rest is made from ice.

I saw these on TV a couple of years ago Sofia and found them to be amazing. They showed how they were made from ice harvest time to the finish and people staying there.
I was in awe. They put in colors and the lights have to be just right. I must say, I dont like the cold, but this is one ice palace I would like to see in person, fit for a king.

Love ya bunches my dear sofia and never worry, you will always be my friend.
Sending you lots of love, peace and light.

When I first saw this, I thought that it was so amazing that someone made such an amazing place and out of ice. And you don't have to worry about your vodka not being cold. :)
Cool pictures! Were these from when you went there?

Thank you, friends!
Ben, I just added pictures taken by me (winter ’07). I was there twice with friends – the winters 06 and 07. It is really amazing! I never slept there (this is too much for me…lol) but they told us that during the night you could experience absolutely silence and cold… But it is so beautiful there… And the ice-bar… the cocktails are so delicious… and always cold… :). Students in Architecture at the University design many rooms.
Thank you, Pollyanna! It worth the visit.
Love!

Now that is so beautiful that I didn't even notice it was a bar until I clicked on it. :)

these are amazing, I wonder what they do for electricity
sofia777 wrote on Mar 16
Thank you very much, Liz!

We’ve got not choice here but to play and to try to have fun with the snow and ice…. We still have a lot of snow and the weather forecast is that this will continue in April too…
This year we broke the record – this winter fell more than 3,50 m (about 140 in) of snow. This is an absolutely record for all the years they measure it…

I have not idea how they do with the electricity but they obviously don’t have problem. They play with this interaction between the ice, snow and the light in different colors… It is so wonderful! I know that students in architecture at our University make a big part of the projects for the rooms – there is a competition announced every fall.
